Fashion designer and photographer Wai Lin Tse was kind enough to answer a few questions for me over email.

Aaron: How has being a fashion designer affected your photography, and vice versa? Did you take up photography as a way to document your designs?

Lin: For me fashion is not only clothes, I feel it’s more for looks and attitudes and I guess that’s the way I document it with my photography. Photography is another way to express myself, just as designing clothes. In some cases there have been garments that I’ve designed in my pictures, but they have not been sought out; it’s more like I’ve used garments that I have easy access to.

Aaron: You live in Barcelona, but your photos are from all over: Sweden, Japan, New York. How does place affect your photography? A lot of your photos from Sweden, particularly, seem very, well…Swedish. There’s a fascination with the light and the landscape, the fabric. I guess what I’m asking is, do you find your inspirations changing from place to place?

Lin: Because I also use photography as a diary or as a souvenir I try to capture what the place makes me feel and what I want to remember of it. All places have different moods that affect the result.

Aaron: There’s a little bit of mystery to your photography. Is that intentional? How much of your photography is professionally motivated, and how much personal?

Lin: In my personal work I take pictures of what I find interesting, I actually find it a mystery myself. I guess that’s why I love photography, I’m daily discovering what I like and what I don’t. For many years my photography has just been for me, it has only been recently that I’ve started professionally. But it still feels extremely personal, I think that if it wasn’t that way I would have to give up.
